Shared baskets
A large Marrakech balloon carries 16 or 19 passengers, according to BallOOning Marrakech and Ciel d’Afrique, the two operators that state it. The basket is divided into compartments around the burner, and there are no seats. Sky Discovery Balloons on Viator splits its basket into sections that travellers describe as five people each. Everyone sees the same horizon; the difference is how much elbow room you have at the rim, and how many phones are held up next to yours.
The options that sell more space use the same balloons with fewer people in them. Marrakech By Air describes its comfort format as a basket split into four compartments of three to five passengers. On the listings compared here, “Comfort Flight” is an option of Marrakech By Air and MarrakeshBallooning, and “Panoramic Comfort Flight” one of Menara Excursions.
Sunrise and the first launch
Balloons do not all take off at once. Marrakech Dream Ballooning puts it plainly: its 6:00 launch flies at sunrise, its 7:00 launch after it. Several listings sell the two waves as separate options:
| Operator | Sunrise option | Compared here |
| Menara Excursions | “1st Sunrise Flight” | First launch |
| Menara Excursions, small group | “1st Flight” | Second flight |
| AtlasMontgolfière | “Guaranteed Sunrise” | Not guaranteed |
| Paradise Ballooning | “Guaranteed sunrise” | Not guaranteed |
| Marrakech Dream Ballooning | 6:00 launch | Both launches |
The last column is the option this site follows and whose price appears in the tables. If you want the sunrise on one of the other listings, pick the sunrise option on the booking page; it costs more. On listings that name no launch time, ask after booking which wave you are on.
Small groups
Menara Excursions names a maximum of 10 or 16 guests for its small-group flight. Palms Ballooning on Viator lists a maximum of 16, while several reviewers counted between 18 and 24 people in their basket. Compare these numbers with the 16 or 19 of a standard shared basket when you choose.
Private flights
The royal flight of Ciel d’Afrique is a private flight of about an hour with breakfast, fruit juice and pastries served in the air. It books for at least two people. BallOOning Marrakech sells its private flight as its own listing, with a Beldi breakfast on board; it is new and has no reviews yet. Menara Excursions also has a private sunrise flight as an option on its first-flight listing.
Flight option or viewing ticket
Several balloon listings sell a ticket to watch the take-off without flying, and that ticket sets the low starting price on the platform. Marrakech By Air calls its main listing “Balloon Activity”; the flight is one option on it, “Only Hot Air Balloon Views - No Flight” is another. MarrakeshBallooning, AtlasMontgolfière and Menara Excursions sell viewing options in the same way. This site follows the price of the flight option on every listing and names that option on each card. On the booking page, check the option name before you pay.
Two more title details: the rooftop breakfast of Menara Excursions moves into a tent when the weather turns, and a balloon sold as a desert flight crosses the dry stony plain north of the city, not the Agafay desert or the Sahara.
Time in the air
Listings that give a range say 40 to 60 minutes in the air, and travellers often report 30 to 50 minutes. None of the upgrades buys a longer flight. The four to five hours on the listings are the whole morning, and the pickup can be as early as four in summer.
Weather and licences
Wind, rain and poor visibility ground the balloons, and the call is often made the evening before, when the pickup time arrives by WhatsApp. Only some listings write down what happens next: both MarrakeshBallooning listings offer a new date or a full refund, and AtlasMontgolfière confirms each flight the day before. On top of the weather, Moroccan media reported in June 2026 that fleets stood on the ground for several days at a time while licence renewals were pending. Book the flight for your first morning in Marrakech, so there is room for a second try.
The licences matter for safety, too. After an airliner crew reported balloons at a forbidden height near Marrakech Menara airport in May 2025, the authorities sanctioned several operators without publishing their names, and flights resumed under stricter rules later that year. Evening flights are not allowed at all, so offers of a sunset balloon are best avoided.
